Is it legal to smoke marijuana anywhere in the US?

I heard it was legal in the town of Arcata, California (it was on the Tonight Show with Jay leno)

Eleven states[7] in the United States passed laws allowing cannabis possession and consumption for medical purposes; however, the Supreme Court of the United States in Gonzales v. Raich ruled that the listing of cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance was constitutional, and that possession for any reason other than approved medical research was therefore illegal under federal law. This remained consistent with their ruling in United States v. Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative, an 8-0 decision stating that there is no exception as a Schedule I drug for people to use cannabis for medical purposes.[8] This creates an interesting tension between state and federal laws.[9] According to The Guardian, Cannabis is now the United States’s number one cash crop.

Some local city governments in the United States have noted that cannabis offenses are already an incredibly low priority for law enforcement, and have passed measures either decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana, or simply instructing local authorities to stop enforcing marijuana laws for small-time users. The city of Denver, Colorado, for instance, passed a law in 2006 which allows residents to legally possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use. Other notable locales include the city of West Hollywood, California, which has instructed local authorities to stop enforcing marijuana laws for those who use only small quantities in their own homes; and the state of Alaska, which allows residents to legally possess up to one ounce for personal use, recently reduced from four ounces.

You need a prescription. I know that in Denver you can carry up to an ounce legally as long as it’s not packaged for resale.

Sure at my house it’s legal and you would be the first to smoke marijuana there too, because nobody else does and regarding that bit on "The Tonight Show," do you really think Jay Leno was telling the truth? I mean come on he’s a comedian and 9 chances out of 10 he’s joking around anyway.

Under federal law, it is illegal everywhere. In CA, we have a medical marijuana initiate that makes it legal if a doctor (MD) prescribes it.

Of course, like everything else, I would surmise that 80% of the "medical marijuana patients" are merely dope heads using the medical use as an excuse to get high. This makes it harder on those who really need the stuff to get by.

and to answer the next poster: yes, I know plenty of potheads who have IQ’s above 150 and hold patents. I also know a lot of "normal" people who condemn others who smoke pot, yet drink JK and Coke everyday with IQ’s below 100 and wouldn’t know a diode from a diaphram. Does that answer your question?

Since it’s a federal law, I doubt that it would be legal there.

It IS legal however on indian reservations if you are a member of an indian tribe that uses it for religious ceremonies.

But I don’t know why you’d want to smoke that stuff. Have you ever met a smart pot head?
